HOS Nightingale Survey
The Nightingale was surveyed nationally by the BTO in 1976, 1980, 1999 and 2012. The last of these was only a partial survey of likely tetrads. The results showed a total of 61 territories, while other records submitted to HOS involved a further 5 territories. The total of 66 compares with 105-123 territories located in the previous national survey in 1999. This population drop mirrors the decline in range between the two breeding atlas projects covering 1986–1991 and 2008-2012, which showed a 76% reduction in range down to just 59 tetrads and disappearance from 183 tetrads. Recent observations suggest a further decline since 2012, and in 2018 HOS will work with HIWWT to carry out a complete survey of known breeding areas with a view to both confirming their presence, and offering management advice to landowners.
