Non-Estuarine Waterbird Survey (NEWS)
In the winter (2015/6), the BTO organised a survey of the open coast - a habitat which is often not monitored by the usual WeBS Core Counts. Details of the survey can be found on the NEWS website.
In Hampshire we had two stretches of coast to survey - in the east from the Chichester Harbour entrance to Hill Head and in the west from Hurst Castle to the Dorset county boundary. These stretches of coast were subdivided into sectors (up to two kilometres in length).
The survey was simple and required a visit to a sector on a date of the surveyor's choosing in December 2015 or January 2016. The survey took place at low tide and required a count of waterbirds seen using the shore and the adjacent land and sea. Information about habitat and disturbance is also requested.
All the Hampshire sectors (priority and non-priority) were allocated, and successfully surveyed. Thanks as always to our willing - and skilled - volunteer counters who carry out surveys along the coast of Hampshire.
